Munich is the capital and largest city of the German federal state of Bavaria, on the banks of River Isar north of the Bavarian Alps. Munich is the third largest city in Germany, after Berlin and Hamburg, with a population of around 1.49 million. The total population of Bavaria is approx. 12.5 million inhabitants.
After Hamburg, Bavaria is Germany’s richest federal state. The district of Munich is even richer with the highest purchasing power in Germany.
Within the last 20 years Munich has become one of Europe’s leading regions within science, innovation, business and technology. 11 of the largest global companies are German – several with headquarters in Munich, e.g. BMW and Siemens. Many business startups establish successfully in Munich with a healthy growth.
Munich furthermore holds two of Europe’s top elite universities: Ludwig-Maximilian-Universität München and Technische Universität München.
